What Are the Most Common Vehicle Maintenance Packages Offered by Auto Repair Shops in Virginia?

What Are the Most Common Vehicle Maintenance Packages Offered by Auto Repair Shops in Virginia?

Keeping your vehicle in good condition doesn’t have to be complicated. In Virginia, many auto repair shops offer preventive maintenance services that help inspect important vehicle components, identify wear, and address potential problems before they turn into more expensive repairs.

One service you may come across is a Tune-Up package, which primarily focuses on engine performance. But what does it include, and how do you know if your vehicle needs one?

What Is a Tune-Up Package?

A tune-up is a maintenance service that involves inspecting specific engine components and replacing worn parts when necessary.

In older vehicles, tune-ups often involved more frequent adjustments to the ignition system. Modern vehicles, however, use electronic systems to control many aspects of engine operation. That’s why a tune-up today should be tailored to your vehicle’s make, model, mileage, and manufacturer’s recommendations.

What Can a Tune-Up Package Include?

Every auto repair shop may offer a different package, but these are some of the services that may be included:

-Spark plug inspection or replacement: Spark plugs provide the spark needed for combustion in gasoline engines. When they become worn, they can cause engine misfires or rough running.

-Engine air filter inspection: A clogged filter can restrict airflow and affect engine performance.

-Ignition system inspection: This helps technicians check components that support proper engine operation.

-Belts and hoses inspection: This helps identify visible wear, cracks, or potential damage.

-Throttle body or fuel system cleaning: These services may be recommended in certain situations, depending on the vehicle’s condition and technical requirements.

-Fluid checks and electronic diagnostics: Some packages include fluid level checks and a diagnostic scan to identify potential trouble codes.

Not every package includes all these services. Before approving any work, ask which components will be inspected, which parts will be replaced, and whether the estimate includes parts and labor.

In this 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE 350, the internal obstruction was the mechanical cause identified during our diagnosis.

Why Was the Engine Still Running Normally?

One of the most interesting aspects of this case was that the Mercedes-Benz continued to operate normally despite having a P0011 fault code.

The vehicle showed:

– No noticeable loss of engine power.
– No unusual engine vibrations.
– No obvious acceleration problems.
– No significant drivability concerns.
– An illuminated Check Engine Light.

This demonstrates that an internal engine timing problem can exist even when the vehicle appears to be operating perfectly.

Although the engine may continue running, the variable camshaft timing system is not functioning as intended.

Ignoring this type of issue can potentially lead to additional performance problems and should be addressed through proper diagnosis.

Researching Mercedes-Benz Technical Service Bulletins

As part of our diagnostic process, we reviewed available Mercedes-Benz technical information and identified documentation related to this type of camshaft timing system failure.

Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) provide valuable information about known vehicle issues, recommended diagnostic procedures, and potential repair solutions.

It is important to understand that a Technical Service Bulletin is not necessarily an official safety recall.

Reviewing manufacturer technical information helped us better understand the failure and determine an appropriate repair strategy without unnecessarily replacing unrelated components.

What Was the Solution for This 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE 350?

After identifying the internal blockage within the Camshaft Phaser, we determined that the appropriate repair was to replace the intake camshaft assembly and its camshaft timing adjustment mechanism, according to the engine’s configuration.

The repair procedure involves:

1. Removing the necessary engine components to access the timing system.
2. Removing the affected intake camshaft assembly.
3. Inspecting the system for metal debris and additional oil passage obstructions.
4. Installing the replacement intake camshaft and Camshaft Phaser assembly.
5. Setting and verifying the engine’s mechanical timing according to manufacturer specifications.
6. Performing diagnostic checks, clearing stored fault codes, and verifying proper camshaft timing operation.

The purpose of this repair is to restore proper variable camshaft timing control and correct the underlying cause of the P0011 fault code.
